WHERE ARE THEY NOW

Soap Opera Digest-10 Feb 2004 Catch up with a former daytimer who found success after soaps.

Clive Robertson calls from home a little jet-lagged because he just returned from Asia, where he was a judge at the Miss World pagent. "It was fantastic," he raves. "The pageant was in China, My grandfather was born in China in 1900 and I always wanted to go. I lived in Singapore when I was a kid, But had never been to Hong Kong so I spent a night there. It was mind-blowing, just a different culture." But he had a reminder of his soap days when his plane got delayed en route. " I hooked up with [fellow judge] Candace Bushnell and [pageant performer] Bryan Ferry at the airport." he explains "I was likened to him once in an Entertainment weekly article when Sunset Beach first came out. They said I looked like Bryan Ferry after a bender." It was at the pageant, reports Robertson, that he "realizes how huge Sunset Beach was around the world. Pretty much to a woman, all the contestants knew me. I had my picture taken with all of them. Huge ego boost." BEACH remains a good memory for Robertson, who still keeps in touch with co-stars Hank Cheyne (ex- Ricardo), Nick Kiriazis (ex-Father Antonio) and Sam Behrens (ex- Gregory). " I learned a lot about acting, about letting go and trusting what I can do is going to work," he offers "playing Derek gave me much more of that. I found a freedom playing the character that I never knew existed, which was both surprising and rewarding at the same time. That show was such a huge success. Wherever I go, I get people asking me about it." After Beach, Robertson considered a return to soaps, even auditioning at Guiding Light, but ultimately nabbed the lead in the syndicated series Starhunter 2300, a sci fi show about interplanctary bounty hunters that also starred Dawn Stern (Vanessa, Young and Restless) "It had a lot of action, which was very exciting for me," he smiles " I got to wear leather pants. We flew around the solar system in our luxury liner, which we used as our spaceship. So, essentially I got to play Captain Kirk, which was quite amusing" Robertson was supposed to return to film the second season last August, but the show hasn't been picked up. In the midst of fimling the series, Robertson and wife Libby welcomed twins Almelia and Alexander on October 25, 2002. " When you have a family, your priorities change, " he reflects. " You start thinking less about yourself and your individual goals, and start thinking about what you need to do to support these little faces." Robertson realized just how precious those faces are after a mugging in Los Angles. "I had dinner with Dawn, and then walked her to her car," he recalls. "Two guys came up to us and wanted to mug me. I was so affrinted that this guy, who came up tomy nect, would grab me that I started struggling. Dawn had managed to run away and try to raise the alarm. And then of course he puulled a gun out, for some stupid reason, it didn't register in a way it should have. I am almost convinced that it was because for seven months, peoplewhere pulling guns out on me on Starhunter that I was so used to itand it didn't have the desired effect. He ended up cracking me on the forehead with it and it cracked my forehead open. There was blood everywhere. We struggled for a minute or so and they ran off we had ambulances and paramedics, police, fire engines, everything. The only consolation is they didn't get anything." At the hospital Robertson got stitched up "I thought my career was over the way they were talking about it," he laughs "And you can barely see the scar, but it's rawkish. They eventually found the people and apparently, they had done 16 other muggings and killed two people. And there I am with two young children, thinking, 'what am I doing?' But in the heat of the moment, you don't know whats happening." Nowadays the actor is developing reality shows and "looking to find the next thing," and he wouldn't mind if it included a return to daytime. "I had a good experince on Sunset Beach," he says. "I felt very much at home in this genre."
